“There’s nowhere else like it in Los Angeles, or the world. It’s in a residential neighborhood and it’s been turned into a luxury property, the way it should be.” –Wolfgang Puck.

You may need your GPS to find it, especially after dark, but it’s well worth the adventure to this 12-acre, Spanish mission-style, magical destination. The hotel theme is an oasis, complete with its own Swan Lake, which you cross by a foot bridge to get to the hotel. The grounds are planted in ficus, fig, palms and continuously-blooming flowers.

Originally built in 1946, the hotel has always had a reputation for being one of the most beautiful, romantic and exclusive hotels in the world. It’s part of the Dorchester Collection, which is owned by the Sulton of Brunei.

It has attracted heads-of-state and countless celebrities. Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 50th birthday here, and Celine Dion surprised her with a rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

The hotel was closed for renovations in 2009. $100 million later, it reopened in 2011.

A large amount of the remodeling expenses went toward the spa, and it shows. The meditation rooms invoke tranquility. The lighting seems perfect, all materials are of the highest quality, and the “sacred dimensions” of the spaces all combine to create a perfect experience.

When it reopened, renowned Chef Wolfgang Puck took over the food and beverage operations for the entire property, including his signature restaurant, Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air.

I love to go here to celebrate special occasions. The piano bar is a great place to start the evening. It is beneficial to reserve a table near the fireplace, or a bit away from the piano for conversation.

The “handcrafted cocktails” are spectacular. I have especially enjoyed the “Pines and Needles” with the strong scent of pine trees, and “Pepino’s Revenge,” with the strong scent of cucumber. They provide tasty snacks to accompany drinks in this low-key, clubby atmosphere.

The restaurant serves California cuisine with Puck’s European influences. Before your first course arrives, you will be offered a selection of home-made breads. They are so delicious that you have to be careful to save room for your meal!

If you have been there before, they will ask if you want the same glass of wine and will ‘remember’ your preferences. The service is said to be perfect, and I would agree with that.

The staff is attentive and will be quick or slow, depending on your wishes. They have even overheard us about a birthday being mentioned and brought the complementary birthday dessert without being asked.

The dining tables are outdoors and so heat lamps are used to make your temperature just right. Reserve early and ask for a cabanna. They are more private tables where celebrities dine.

I have ventured beyond the most spectacular Tortelloni Pasta appetizers. The ingredients change depending on the season, such as corn or pumpkin. This dish is to die-for.

The main menu is a bit limited in selection for vegetarians, but I love their fish entrée. One time, a whole fish for 2 was de-boned at our table. On other times, the pan roasted Loup de Mar was created in single portions.

For such a place, prices for appetizers and main courses are surprisingly reasonable. The selection of wines by the bottle or glass is extensive, pleasing and pricy. Overall, dining here is one of the most enjoyable experiences ever. Perfect for a personal reward, or a life celebration with friends, family or someone special.

Located inside the prestigious Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, the Belvedere is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This elegant and comfortable dining room has hosted all major Hollywood “A list” celebrities, entertainment agents & managers and movie producers.

The decor is classic, bright and spacious. I like the fact that they have an incredible wine cellar. As a result, their wine list is very impressive. Their wines are from around the world, and the bottles can be quite pricey.

The Peninsula Hotel is managed by an Asian hotel group. Stop by the Bar and sip a cocktail next to your favorite celebrity, or get a memorable ‘high tea’ experience at the living room with your girlfriends or family. My favorite spot to sit is in their stunning outside patio garden with the fountain.

For a more casual menu, the Roof Garden restaurant– between the pool and the SPA—is perfect if you are seeking a more simple and relaxed atmosphere. Their food is tasty and their service is impeccable. I love my Truffle Macaroni and Cheese and my Bread and Pudding dessert.

Their brunch on Sunday is one of the best in town. Besides that, they serve you more than enough Champagne…you will have a buffet with a large variety of choice. Do not forget to stop by the fantastic and unforgettable crispy duck station, maybe the best you will have in your whole life.

This place is all about organic, market-fresh ingredients carefully selected. A symphony of savored ingredients that have a taste that is rare in America.
The all-season garden with heaters and inviting interior dining room area has a wonderful at-home feeling. At lunch, there is usually a delightfully peaceful atmosphere. I usually like to seat inside at a large booth because lunch is not that busy, so if you are meeting with your agent or a biz partner, this is the perfect place.
At dinner, it has a more romantic candlelight atmosphere. The menu is short and straight to the point.
At Lucques restaurant you must TRUST the Chef and you will be delighted you did. Foodies, you should try the endive and schaner citrus salad with blood oranges and green olives.
The pastries are delicious and so are the cocktails. I relish the grapevine cocktail with absinthe and cucumber.
Service is attentive and smooth. Beautiful and talented Chef Suzanne Goin is a female Chef in the still-closed culinary men’s world. Thumbs up for her and her team! Open for more than a decade, this is an authentic, contemporary Italian Trattoria inspired by Chef and co-owner Agostino Sciandri’s first restaurant Toscano in Westwood. Most of the staff is Italian.This is a partnership with actor Robert De Niro, it’s a great place to spot celebrities.

I recommend starting with the famous Peach Martini. They also offer a diversified selection of Italian wines, and also carry French and Californian labels. On Thursday Nights, get a free drink on the house.

This restaurant is part of the B&B Hospitality Group, and “Iron Chef” Mario Batali is one of the “B”s. Their mission: “Our restaurant group was founded on traditional Italian principles: the notion that food is best left to its simple beauty, that the dining experience should be shared with loved ones, and that we can leave the world in a better place than how we came into it.” So how did they do?

It’s very difficult getting a prime time reservation on a Friday or Saturday evening, so we went early at 5 pm. It was busy, but the only table for two sitting side-by-side was available, and we grabbed it.

We wanted to start with a pinot noir, and the waiter selected something similar from the Italian wine selection. They have a wine option of getting almost 2 full glasses of wine in flutes for a pretty reasonable price.

For an appetizer, we ordered a new item, fried cauliflower with a dipping sauce. It looked like a lot, but we devoured it quickly. The wait-staff shared responsibilities and were very efficient. For example, after we finished a glass of wine, and our waiter was getting a refill, another waiter came over to ask if we needed more. They were that quick. At the same time, although there was obviously a turning-over of tables, we sat for over 2 hours and were not rushed or pressured at all.

We had a bruschette with house-made, melted mozzarella cheese. That disappeared before you could say, “L’appetito vien mangiando.”

The pizza we selected for our main course was simple: prosciutto topped with greens. It was true to the B&B Mission Statement: simple and delicious.

Located in the heart of downtown LA, in the historical 1928 Art deco Oviatt Building (some say is haunted), this place has been featured in numerous Hollywood film productions, such as in a scene of one of the best films of the year, “The Artist.” (It’s a back-in-time sensation from the Glamour and the Golden Ages of the early bloom of the entertainment industry. It spans the era of Al Capone through post-World War II–the 1920s to 1950s.)
You are strongly encouraged to dress with vintage attire. But if you don’t want to do that, their dress code policy is a jacket and tie for the gentlemen and a cocktail dress for the ladies.
They feature an Italian menu, with an option for vegetarians. My favorite item, “The Valentino’s Pizza Romantic,” is named after my favorite celebrity of that time period. A selection of classic Gin and Bourbon Cocktails are served. My favorite is the Maxwell’s Side Car.
Every Sunday, a live broadcast session is streamed online with dance performers, live band performance, inspired by retro bands, actors and artists, in a sensational ambiance swing, groovy, Mocambo and Orchestra. Check out the dance contest events and have fun.
